Fast approaching is one of the most important holidays on the Muslim calendar. This year Eid Al-Adha, also referred to as Eid Al-Kabir - the "Big Holiday" - because of its tremendous significance, will take place on 26 Oct, 2012 and generally lasts for 3 days.
Eid Al-Adha translates to "Festival of Sacrifice" and commemorates the prophet Abraham's willingness to obey God when he envisioned he was to sacrifice his son. Muslims observe this day by slaughtering an animal - usually a sheep, goat or cow - according to humane Islamic guidelines, and then offering much of its meat in charity.
It's a fascinating time to stay in a Marrakech riad and witness the local culture - there's a sense of excitement in the air, especially among the Marrakechi children, who also receive new clothes for the festival. During this time you can savour some of the most delicious Moroccan lamb dishes.
